On January 2, 1917, Ted Strong Jr. was born in South Bend, IN. He was the first of 14 children to be born to Vera Smith and Theodore Relighn Strong Sr. This eventual two-sport athlete would become a major star in the Negro Baseball Leagues and captain and lead the Harlem Globetrotters in basketball.
