SEL, STEM Girls Conference In Aurora, IL Expected To Benefit 500 Community Teens

October 26, 2016

Aurora IL – An estimated 500 girls are expected to attend an upcoming conference intended to inspire and empower teens through messages of self-esteem and the importance of making good choices for their lives.

The Aurora-based conference, IN.lighten.ME.nt Girls Conference, is sponsored by True Eagle Beauty Foundation, an organization committed to increasing the self-esteem and success of youth through workshops, mentoring and other educational programming around social and emotional learning skills.

This FREE conference is open to all girls’ grades 6th through 12th and will be held at Metea Valley High School in Aurora, November 19, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Morning breakout sessions will include topics such as; Understanding Your Emotions, Dealing With Anger, The Power of Positive Thinking, and Letting Go of Stress…just to name a few. Afternoon sessions will feature topics around S.T.E.M. education to teach girls about the importance of developing skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.  All attendees will receive complimentary continental breakfast, lunch, t-shirt and gift bag. There will also be vendors onsite.

This conference is a way to help girls receive education around social and emotional learning skills and increase their interest in in STEM. that are lacking for many of them in today’s society, said VaLarie Humphrey, Founder and CEO of True Eagle Beauty Foundation.

“Seventy-five percent of girls with low self-esteem report engaging in negative activities,” said Humphrey. “We’re providing the type of education that is missing so that girls can elevate self-esteem, feel better about who they are and make good choices for their lives,” she said.

“We’re seeing a large number of African American and Latina girls not graduating from college. We want to change the staggering statistic,” Humphrey said.

Conference breakout session also will be offered for adults to encourage personal growth and support as well. “The top wish among all girls is for their parents to communicate better with them,” said Humphrey. “We have programming for parents as well as the youth to help improve communication skills between parents and youth.”
